Updated: September 6, 2012 6:14AM

Area police and fire departments will take part in the National Night Out — an event designed to promote crime prevention awareness.

It also allows the public to interact with members of the police department and obtain information about its programs

Joliet

The Joliet Police Department will participate from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Joliet Park District, 3000 W. Jefferson St. The department encourages all residents to turn on their porch lights during the evening to show their support for deterring crime and maintaining a safe community.

There will be raffles and give-aways sponsored by Target. A variety of police vehicles and equipment will be on hand, including canine demonstrations.

Crime prevention tips and information on how to establish or participate in neighborhood watch will also be available.

The park district will have games and prizes for children who attend. Admittance and parking are free.

Plainfield

The Plainfield Fire Protection District and the Plainfield Police Department will hold an open house from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the former fire station at 15025 S. Des Plaines St.

There will be crafts, games, raffles and displays. The event will be held in conjunction with Mainstreet Plainfield’s weekly Cruise Night.

Frankfort

The Frankfort Police Department’s event will be from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday on the Breidert Green, Kansas and White streets.

Come out and enjoy hot dogs grilled by Chief John Burica. The food is free and will be served after the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Activities include Reptile Rampage, emergency vehicles on display the Frankfort Fire Department smoke house, games, a dunk tank and safety information.
