Aug. 19:

50 years ago, 1962

The huge chimney at the Will County generating station of the ComEd company was “topped” at 500 feet. It is steel-lined. The three platforms are for servicing the aviation lights that warn aircraft of the huge stack. The chimney was erected as part of the station’s 510,000-kilowatt addition, due to be completed next year.

25 years ago, 1987

Illinois Sheriffs’ Association academic scholarships were awarded to a Lockport student and a New Lenox student. Karel L. Skubal, 18, of Lockport and Nancy L. Benjamin, 17, of New Lenox received the scholarships from Sheriff John Johnsen at the Will County Courthouse.
