NEW LENOX — The recent weather breaks and rain may mean the end to the excessively hot summer. It won’t be long before autumn’s trees grow bare and New Lenox is getting ready for a new leaf collection program.
Starting Oct. 1, the village will provide free leaf collection without brown bags. Leaves must be placed correctly, about 12 inches from the curb on the grass. Leaves cannot be on the street or behind obstacles, such as parked vehicles, trees, mailboxes or fire hydrants.
This new program is in addition to the existing program. The village also will collect bagged leaves Oct. 25 to Nov. 30 on the regular garbage collection days.
To complete the new program, which ends Nov. 30, crews will begin on the north side of town and work south. The village hopes to collect leaves at least once a week, Administrator Kurt Carroll said Monday.
Senior citizens over the age 65 qualify for up to 10 free yard waste bags per household.
For more information about any of the leaf collection services, call the village at 815-462-6400.
