New Lenox police start crime tip line

Updated: September 22, 2012 6:09AM

NEW LENOX — The New Lenox Police Department is introducing a new crime tip hotline. Callers can report information anonymously.

The hotline is not targeted to any particular type of crime, said Chief Bob Sterba.

“We are just hoping it makes it easier for those who would otherwise be reluctant to call to make the community safer,” the chief said. “A lot of people know things, a lot of people think they know things, a lot of people suspect things.”

The hotline number is 815-462-6111. Callers are encouraged to leave a lengthy message with as much detail as possible. Details may include dates, times, locations, descriptions and any other pertinent information.

“There’s an old saying ‘the police would rather be called and not needed than needed and not called’,” Mayor Tim Baldermann said.
