Route 53 work to begin near Elwood

Route 53 work to begin Tuesday

ELWOOD — The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a project to resurface Route 53 between Hoff and Manhattan roads will begin, weather permitting, on Tuesday.

The project will require daytime, temporary lane closures.

The estimated completion date is Oct. 31. Gallagher Asphalt Corp. of Thornton is the prime contractor on the $1.4 million project.

Farther south on Route 53, a resurfacing project between Hoff and South Arsenal roads is anticipated to be finished Sept. 15.

An intersection widening project at Route 53 and North River Road in Wilmington is scheduled to be completed Sept. 30.

Swim team hosts clinic

JOLIET — The Joliet Y JETS Swim Team will host its annual Fall Swim Clinic Sept. 10-15, at the Smith Family YMCA, 1350 S. Briggs St.

At the completion of the clinic, swimmers who wish to join the team will be given a group placement along with registration materials. Cost is $25.

Times are: ages 5-10, 6-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8-9 a.m. Saturday; and ages 11-18, 7-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8-9 a.m. Saturday.
