Kids can make robots at 4-H science day

Updated: October 7, 2012 7:54AM

JOLIET — The University of Illinois Will County Extension invites local youths ages 8 and older to join in the 2012-2013 4-H National Youth Science Day Eco-Bot Challenge from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Will County Extension Office, 100 Manhattan Road.

In this year’s experiment, youths will enhance their engineering skills by learning to think like a robotics engineer, assembling their own robots, also known as Eco-Bots, and control surfaces to manage an environmental cleanup.

Youths will then test the interaction between the Eco-Bot’s environmental engineering design features and various control surface configurations to determine the most effective environmental cleanup solution for a simulated toxic spill.

The free program is open to a maximum of 40 participants.

Registration is required and can be done at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/gkw/ or by calling 815-727-9296.

The registration deadline is Sept. 21. For information, contact John Davis, 4-H youth development educator, at johnd1@illinois.edu or 815-942-2725 or 815-727-9296.
