King Football opened its 1962 reign in Joliet when players of Joliet Township High School and Joliet Catholic High School squared off for their annual classic in Joliet Memorial Stadium before the largest crowd ever to pack the oval and the largest to see a JTHS game. JT won the opener 19- 0.
25 years ago, 1987
Gov. James R. Thompson vetoed a bill on adoption of the “Tully monster” as the state fossil. He said an election among school children would be too expensive and resemble the system used in the Soviet Union. “It’s either yes or no on the Tully monster,” he said. “That’s un- American. That’s how they run elections in Russia. This is not Russia, it’s Illinois.”
