50 years ago, 1962

Approximately half of the square block needed for the planned location of a city hall building and new downtown police and fire stations has been obtained by negotiations with the property owners. The multimillion-dollar project is planned for the block bounded by Jefferson, Joliet, Washington and Desplaines streets. In the “near settlement” stage were the Ben Levin properties, at 116 W. Jefferson St., and Shepley Motor Express properties, at 2. N. Desplaines.

25 years ago, 1987

Larry Cryder, 43, of rural Minooka was not injured when his helicopter crashed while he was crop dusting a field near Route 126 and County Line Road in Kendall County. Cryder, an employee of Harold’s Helicopter Service of Sandwich, had just finished spraying insecticide on a farm field when the problem occurred and the helicopter went down.
