JOLIET — When Mayor Tom Giarrante and his wife Rose celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year, they thought it would be a nice gesture to hold a small community celebration honoring other Joliet couples who had also passed the matrimonial milestone.
“Much to our surprise, over 60 couples attended the event,” Giarrante said.
Because last year was such a success, the Giarrantes have decided to make it an annual event. This year’s celebration will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at Joliet Moose Lodge 300 at 25 Springfield Ave.
“You read so much about couples not staying together anymore,” Giarrante said. “But 120 people proved those headlines to be wrong last year. We’re looking to draw more couples than before.”
The all-ages event is free and open to the public.
Reservations are not required, but those Joliet-area couples married for 50 years or more who wish to attend the event and pose for the group photo should call 815-724-3700.
