New Lenox mulls annexation of Providence property

Updated: November 16, 2012 6:05AM

NEW LENOX — Providence Catholic High School wants to be entirely in New Lenox.

On Monday, the village board discussed annexing the remaining two parcels at the southeast corner of Washington Street and Route 30.

Before Route 30 was improved, the old Washington Street dissected these two parcels from the rest of the Providence campus. Now, the triangular-shaped property houses a parking lot and a billboard.

“It is what it is,” said Providence attorney Maureen Harton. “It’s just a parking lot and an old street that doesn’t exist.”

Two weeks ago the board held a public hearing on the issue. Discussion was had about the billboard that is currently leased until March 2020. Director of Community Development Robin Ellis requested that a date be added to the agreement specifying when the billboard will be removed.

In two weeks, the board will vote, according to Mayor Tim Baldermann. Board members did not voice opposition to the annexation.
