Grants awarded to Will County area school districts

State Sen. Pat McGuire (D-Joliet) announced that 10 Will County school districts have been awarded more than $450,000 combined in state grants for repairs and maintenance.

The school districts receiving the grants are Wilco Area Career Center, Chaney-Monge SD 88, Elwood CCSD 203, Joliet PSD 86, Lockport Township HSD 205, Manhattan SD 114, Rockdale SD 84, Taft SD 90 and Valley View CUSD 365U.

The grants are aimed at helping schools with repairs and improvements to existing buildings and facilities. The dollars can be used to pay for asbestos removal, repairing, bleachers, resealing parking lots and other maintenance projects. This is a matching grant program with a maximum state award of $50,000.

Martinez hosting annual community recycling event Nov. 3

The A. Vito Martinez Middle School Ecology Club and the village of Romeoville are co-sponsoring a recycling event next weekend. The “Greening Up America” event is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.

The event will include kids activities and crafts utilizing recyclable materials as well as a presentation by Valley View School District 365U officials on environmentally friendly projects at their schools.

Community members may bring cans, newspapers, household batteries, used books, tires, printer cartridges, bicycles, canning jars, electronics, cell phones, glasses, hearing aids and plastic bags for recycling.

The event also will feature a Green Products Showcase.
