Democrats took state legislative contests races in Will County, overcoming Republican campaigns that blamed them for state fiscal problems.
Natalie Manley even overcame an early campaign embarrassment, her arrest for a domestic incident at her Joliet home. The charges were later dismissed, but Manley’s opponent sent out several campaign mailings that featured her mushot from the night of the arrest.
Manley, however, got 61 percent of the vote in the 98th House District, defeating Republican Robert Kalnicky.
In another hotly contested race, Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant won with 53 percent of the vote over Garrett Peck. The campaign drew a lot of money with Bertino-Tarrant getting support from labor unions, while business groups funded Peck’s campaign.
Bertino-Tarrant is the superintendent of schools in Will County. Peck is a Plainfield village trustee.
Democratic incumbents in the legislative districts that cover most of Joliet won easily, getting more than twice the votes of their opponents. Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, had 69 percent of the vote, and Rep. Larry Walsh, D-Elwood, won with a 71 percent majority. Both were in their first legislative elections, having replaced Democrats who resigned after the primaries.
Republican Sandy Johnson of Manhattan was challenging McGuire in the 43rd Senate District. Ryan Alm, a paralegal from Joliet, faced Walsh in the 86th House District.
Incumbent state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, a Democrat who represents the eastern part of Will County, won with 60 percent of the vote. She was opposed by Republican Tuck Marshall in the 40th District.
Republicans did well as expected in Grundy County, although incumbent Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, appeared to be in a tight contest for a part of the night. She moved ahead as more precincts were counted. With all but six precincts in, Rezin had 54 percent of the vote.
Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris, won 63 percent of the vote with nearly all precincts counted, beating Jeremy Ly, a Minooka Democrat.
