Veterans Day event Sunday in downtown Joliet

“Veterans Committed to Serving Our Country” will be the theme for the Veterans Day program in downtown Joliet.

The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Eternal Flame on the north side of the Will County Courthouse on Jefferson Street. Parking is available east of the courthouse.

The Joliet American Legion Band, directed by Tom Drake, will kick off the ceremony. The formation and massing of colors will follow at 10:15 a.m.

Event coordinator Don Walden will give the welcome, whild Steve Brandy of WJOL will be master of ceremonies.

Program will include USN/Chaplain Commander Ron Neitzke, pastor of St. Mary Nativity Church; national anthem by Elaine Swearingen; pledge by Andy Hinch, commander of American Legion Post 1080; Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante; Will County Executive Larry Walsh; and Joan Ricard, director of Hines VA Hospital.

The Legion Band will perform a musical Gettysburg Address.

The event will close with a placing of the wreath, gun salute and music.

Open houses will be held after the event at American Legion Post 1080, VFW Post 2199, American Legion Post 5, VFW Post 367 and American Legion Post 241.
