50 years ago, 1962

Shelters and attitudes toward Civil Defense were discussed by the Rev. Hubert L. Entwisle of Pekin at a countywide Civil Defense meeting in Joliet. Entwisle said he didn’t believe Civil Defense was useless and that “We cannot win the war of the future using the same methods we used in the last war.”

25 years ago, 1987

A person buying a $40 pair of shoes in Joliet will pay 30 cents more as a citywide sales tax goes into effect for the first time. The .75 percent tax was approved by the city council in October and — combined with a 2 percent tax on electric, telephone and gas utilities — is intended to alleviate the city’s fiscal problems.
