JOLIET — Bruce Gempel, charged in the murder of an 89-year-old neighbor in Crest Hill, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
On Saturday, Will County Circuit Court Judge M. Thomas Carney set his bail at $1 million. Gempel, who is being held at the county jail, appeared via video for that hearing.
Gempel, 48, was arrested Thursday on charges of first-degree murder and arson in the death of Dorothy Dumyahn, who was found dead Nov. 18 after her home on Caton Farm Road was set on fire, Crest Hill Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said.
Funeral services for Dumyahn were to be held Monday in Joliet. She is survived by two children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
