JOLIET — The ongoing project to repair the Ruby Street bridge will stretch into the new year, and the bridge likely will remain closed until mid-February.
Previously scheduled to open to traffic Jan. 1, unanticipated mechanical problems will require more time to finish the job.
The Illinois Department of Transportation expects the work will be completed and the bridge reopened by Feb. 18.
The bridge has been closed since July and originally was set to reopen in November.
Southbound Route 53 traffic may follow a detour west on Theodore Street to Plainfield Road (Route 30), south on Plainfield to Jefferson Street and east on Jefferson to Ottawa Street (Route 53).
Northbound Route 53 traffic can detour west on Cass Street to Center Street, north on Center to Plainfield, north on Plainfield to Theodore and east on Theodore to Broadway.
