HOMER TOWNSHIP — Fire spread from an attached garage to damage a house Friday afternoon, but no one was injured in the blaze.

Capt. Edward McCormack said residents were home when the blaze began at 1:05 p.m. in the 16500 block of West McDonald Drive but were able to escape.

An ATV parked inside the garage was destroyed, and firefighters were on the scene for two hours.

Fire Chief Bob Tutko said the cause of the fire remained undetermined Friday afternoon but looks to have started near where the ATV was hooked up to a battery charger.

He said the quick response of his firefighters helped prevent further damage and a steel entry door between the garage and the house helped slow the spread of the fire.

Still, the fire caused an estimated $500,000 damage to the home, which was valued at $1.5 million, he said.

Firefighters were able to salvage the Christmas presents for the family, who have another place to stay for the holidays, Tutko said.

Car burglar arrested

HOMER GLEN — A 22-year-old man allegedly took items from several unlocked vehicles.

After Christian Kuhny argued with his mother Sunday night she found cell phones, GPS units and car chargers in the basement of 14440 S. Pine Grove Drive, Will County sheriff’s police reported.

After police were notified, Kuhny was questioned and allegedly admitted taking the items from other cars. He was booked into the county jail Wednesday on four counts of burglary to a motor vehicle.
