50 years ago, 1962

Mayor James P. Hennessy plans to hand the state of Illinois Highway Department an ultimatum: Give us more motor fuel tax money for state highway maintenance in Joliet, or clean the snow and sweep the debris from the state highways yourself. He reported that he will ask support of the city council to adopt a resolution for $40,000 more in motor fuel tax refunds.

25 years ago, 1987

Tempers flared at times during a marathon Will County Officers Electoral Board hearing in the challenge of nominating petitions of Recorder of Deeds James O’Connell. Some of the 30 witnesses subpoenaed by lawyers for Shirley Kusta of Bolingbrook waited up to 10 hours before they testified. Kusta claims only 82 of her opponent’s petition signatures are valid.
