Joliet is on the threshold of vast community growth and development as it steps into the New Year. The year 1963 will see the rebuilding of the downtown section. A city hall will also rise in downtown Joliet. New police and fire stations will also be centered in the block of Jefferson, Joliet, Washington and Desplaines streets. The Housing Authority of Joliet will also build a 14-story senior citizen project on Crowley Avenue, between Joliet and Ottawa streets.

Engaged couples seeking to cut wedding costs queued up to the Will County Clerk’s marriage license counter during the last few days of 1987. Starting Jan. 1, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test is required by state law to be taken no more than 30 days before a marriage license is applied for. An informal survey of some medical clinics in the area shows the costs for the test ranges from $30 to $50 per person. In addition, couples have to pay for a syphilis test.
