Political lunch

JOLIET — The deadline to register for the Joliet Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 2013 legislative update luncheon is Thursday. State Sens. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant and Pat McGuire and state Reps. Renee Kosel and Natalie Manley will speak during the event. The cost is $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers. The luncheon will be at the Patrick C. Haley Mansion, 17 S. Easter Seals program to help kids literacy program

The Joliet Region Easter Seals Jump Star Program will be receiving federal money to help improve literacy among young children in Will County.

The money from the U.S. Department of Education is expected to help more than 100 local families.

Participants will take part in word play games rhymes and learn conversation techniques that are designed to help parents encourage reading. Children who participate in the program will receive a free book through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Police explorer program

PLAINFIELD — Plainfield Police are accepting applications from people interested in the department’s police explorer program.

The training is aimed at people interested in a career in law enforcement and offers a peek at the daily activities of police officers. The program is intended for people between the ages of 14 and 20.

Applicants must complete an application, pass a background check, get their parents’ permission and attend an information meeting on Feb. 6 at 4 p.m.

Applications are available at the Plainfield Police Department or through high school resource officers. The deadline is Feb. 4.
