Early Days

Jan. 16:

50 years ago, 1963

Its block-long warehouse facilities at 1018 E. Cass St., destroyed by a $115,000 fire, the Blue Ribbon Products Co. was back in business from a temporary location. Mrs. Elva Londergon, president-treasurer of the firm that distributes Pabst products in this area, estimated the loss of approximately two carloads of beer at between $35,000 and $40,000.

25 years ago, 1988

Chris Szabo, 14, a freshman at Joliet Central High School, is The Herald- News’ Carrier of the Week. He has been delivering the paper on Joliet’s southwest side for 16 months. His hobbies include collecting baseball cards and playing in the Ingalls Park Pony League. He plans to go to college and become an architect. He says the paper route has taught him how to communicate with people and be responsible with money.
