The average Facebook News Feed is filled with trying-to-hard-to-be-funny photos and mundane status updates.

To add some local, useful information to its fan’s feeds, the Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce has begun using its posts to profile local businesses.

“There are unique businesses right under our nose,” executive director Denise Schmidt said. “This can bring our members to your attention and that they’re right around the corner from you.”

Since the start of 2013, the chamber has named a “featured member of the day” and provided brief description of the business.

“We want to say, ‘Hi, I’m here. This is what I do,’” she said.

A majority of the chamber’s members opted into the social media promotion, which also includes posts to Twitter. Businesses and organizations such as Diva’s Salon and Spa, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA and R&J Asphalt Maintenance already have been featured, and future posts will include small, privately run businesses and big-box retailers alike.

As another vehicle to increase visibility of the chamber’s membership, Schmidt said business owners have been “extraordinarily positive” in their response to the initiative.

Schmidt said she developed the idea for the chamber’s social media campaign and believes it will be useful information for Facebook users who might otherwise be cluttered with inconsequential posts.
