Police blotter: Police dog finds drugs

Updated: February 26, 2013 6:25AM

JOLIET — A police dog reportedly found cocaine in a hidden compartment during a traffic stop Tuesday.

At 1:32 p.m. Officer Bert Badertscher reportedly saw a silver Jeep Cherokee with no front license plate on Theodore Street near Raynor Avenue.

Cmdr. Al Roechner said a computer check showed the rear plate had been reported stolen from Brookfield, so Badertscher pulled the vehicle over in a parking lot.

“The driver, Luis A. Cruz, 31, handed over a state ID card because his driver’s license expired in 2007. He did, however, show proof of current insurance,” Roechner noted.

When Badertscher’s canine, Hero, reportedly “alerted” at the front of the driver’s area, officers found baggies containing 4.5 ounces of cocaine and a pill in a concealed space.

Cruz, of 4626 Vernon Ave. in Brookfield, was booked into the county jail on charges of delivery of drugs and utilizing a hidden compartment. His passenger was released without being charged.

Police said someone in a dark-colored, four-door car fired at a group of people who had just walked outside.

Both victims were driven to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet before police arrived.

A 26-year-old Lockport man was struck in the abdomen and was listed in good condition Thursday morning. An 18-year-old Joliet man was treated for a wound to his left arm and released.
