50 years ago, 1963

Five minutes before she was about to board a West Coast train in Joliet, a Hammond, Ind., woman was arrested by the FBI for a Gary bank robbery. Local agents stepped up to Caroline McQueen Molden, 18, in the Union Depot as she was buying travelers checks. It was a tip from Molden’s husband that focused the search on the Joliet area.

25 years ago, 1988

A Pontiac prison inmate led officials to a loaded .25-caliber automatic pistol and told them it was meant to kill one of the top three prison administrators. The inmate approached prison officials and made the offer to show them the weapon in exchange for time off his sentence and a transfer to another prison facility. The pistol was a seven-shot, chrome-plated, pearl-handled Raven model.
