While the group is planning its sixth kickoff meeting, the American Cancer Society honored the New Lenox Relay for Life for raising $500,000 in its first five years.
The society presented a special banner at the New Lenox Village Board meeting. Regional Director Sara Polinski said it truly is amazing to have raised that much money in such a short time.
Mayor Tim Baldermann credited Nick and April DiSandro for starting the organization. The DiSandros lost their daughter to cancer. The mayor also said it’s difficult for any organization to transition from two successful chairs, like the DiSandros, to new people and keep the event going strong.
“They did it, and we want to thank you for the new leadership,” Baldermann said of new co-chairs Terrie Murphy and her daughter Erin Okresik.
This year’s Relay for Life will be July 12. The kickoff meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at Village Hall. Murphy said volunteers don’t need any experience to join.
