Art by 12 Channahon Pioneer Path School third- and fourth-grade students is featured in the 2013 Channahon Fire Protection District calendar — the district’s first.

In previous years, the fire district sponsored poster contests for Channahon first- and second-graders on home fire escape plans.

This year, it expanded to the subject of safety with third- and fourth-graders.

The idea of a calendar worked out perfectly, said fire department spokeswoman Cindy Wilson. There are six third-grade classes and six fourth-grade ones, so one student’s artwork was chosen from each class to grace the calendar.

Pioneer Path Assistant Principal Kathy Bisch showed off the calendar to school board members last week.

Student winners were Delainey Roots (January), Mitch Thomas (February), Mallory Wennberg (March), Jordanna Cortes (April), Jaimi Curtis (May), Kayla Widlowski (June), Pierce Hadden (July), McKenna Maskel (August), Jack Fink (September), Luc Strange (October), Payton Gregorich (November) and Lilliana Lozano (December).

The subjects of their artwork included fire safety, choking prevention, calling 911, consequences of texting while driving, poison prevention, severe weather safety, bike safety, water safety, burn prevention, firearms injury protection, pedestrian safety and fall prevention.

Wilson said the fire department sponsors the competition not only to get kids thinking about the subjects, but to remind the adults in their lives, month by month, how to keep safe. An example, she said, is what to do when someone begins to choke. That’s something everyone should remember.
