Police Blotter: Man, 2 women killed in crash

Updated: March 8, 2013 7:25AM

CHICAGO — A Romeoville man and two women died Tuesday night after the sport utility vehicle they were riding in hit a light pole and flipped over on the city’s Southwest Side, police said.

The single-vehicle crash happened near West 31st Street and South Western Avenue about 8:30 p.m. as the group traveled east, authorities said.

The three were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they died less than an hour later, authorities said.

Phillip Barnes, 46, of the 1500 block of Ludington Circle in Romeoville, died within minutes of fellow passengers Yvonne Tobias, 57, and Leantwana Roseburr, 40, who were both from Chicago, the Cook County medical examiner’s office reported.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit was collecting details on the crash early Wednesday.

Woman pinned

BOLINGBROOK — An 18-year-old woman was struck by a minivan and pinned under it while crossing the street Tuesday.

Lt. Mike Rompa said the accident happened at 5:43 p.m. as a 65-year-old woman was driving a Chevrolet Astrovan east on Boughton Road and turned onto Ashbury.

The van struck the woman in the crosswalk. She was extricated by firefighters and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital but her injuries were not life-threatening, Rompa said.

The intersection was closed to traffic for an hour and the accident remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon.

Fire damages business

NEW LENOX — Fire damaged a small manufacturing company Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Chief Jon Mead said crews were called at 12:17 p.m. to Modern Food Concepts, 22003 Howell Drive, where stovetops and other steel kitchen items are made. Four people were inside but were able to escape without injury.

“It took about an hour to put (the fire) out. We had to cut through some metal to get into the attic,” Mead said. “The cause is still under investigation but this appears accidental.”

Reports estimated the business sustained $15,000 of damage.
