JOLIET — A 31-year-old Joliet man was shot in the neck at a gas station in the 300 block of South Chicago Street at 3 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The man was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center then flown by helicopter to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood for his wound, which could leave him paralyzed, according to Lt. Jeff Allbert.
The victim was in the gas station parking lot when someone on foot shot him with a handgun and fled. No arrests have been made and the motive for the crime is unknown, Allbert said.
Man charged in child beating
MORRIS — A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly beating a child two years ago.
On Nov. 13, 2011, a young girl was brought to Morris Hospital with “extensive life-threatening, nonaccidental injuries,” Police Chief Brent Dite said.
The child later was airlifted to the intensive care unit at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
On Wednesday, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland brought the case to a grand jury, which returned an indictment against Zachary E. Connor.
“Connor was identified as a suspect early in the investigation (but) the complex nature of this case required lots of interviews, review of medical records and consultation with the state’s attorney’s office,” Dite said.
Joliet police took Connor into custody Thursday at 306 Marble St. on charges of aggravated battery and endangering the life or health of a child. Connor is being held in the Grundy County Jail on $25,000 bond.
Police: Thief carrying heroin
JOLIET — Police say a man was carrying heroin when he was picked up for a theft at the Joliet Junior College bookstore.
Cmdr. Melvin Cornelius said Devon M. Kalas, 24, was seen taking a book Tuesday without paying for it but was identified from surveillance video.
“On Wednesday he was seen in a vehicle back on campus and officers made a traffic stop. As he was getting out, a few small packages fell to the ground,” Cornelius said.
Those packages reportedly contained heroin, and syringes also were found in the vehicle.
Kalas, of 341 Eaton Ave. in Romeoville, was booked into the county jail on charges of theft, drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
