GRUNDY COUNTY — A 28-year-old Essex man was struck by a train and killed Wednesday afternoon while riding an ATV near Gardner.

Coroner John W. Callahan said around 12:30 p.m. three ATVs were traveling northeast on the railroad right-of-way toward the village

“The three ATVs were approximately an eighth of a mile southwest of the Maher Road Crossing when an Amtrak train struck the last of the three ATVs from behind,” Callahan said.

Callahan pronounced Brad Emanuelson dead at the scene at 1 p.m.

No injuries in school bus crash

MONEE TOWNSHIP — The driver and a student escaped serious injury when a school bus veered off the road and overturned Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred at 7:19 a.m. when a 12-year-old girl was the only student on the Crete School District bus with the 43-year-old driver. Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the bus was a quarter-mile north of Dralle Road on Harlem Avenue when the rear wheels went off the right side of the road.

“In an attempt to correct (he) lost control of the bus, sending it down the ditch. The bus swiped a tree and turned onto its side,” Hoffmeyer said.

The driver and student were treated by EMS but declined to be hospitalized. The girl’s mother and an assistant dean from the school came to the scene, according to reports.
