Essex man killed when train hits his ATV

GRUNDY COUNTY — A 28-year-old Essex man was struck by a train and killed Wednesday afternoon while riding an ATV near Gardner.

Coroner John W. Callahan said around 12:30 p.m. three ATVs were traveling northeast on the railroad right-of-way toward the village

“The three ATVs were approximately an eighth of a mile southwest of the Maher Road Crossing when an Amtrak train struck the last of the three ATVs from behind,” Callahan said.

Callahan pronounced Brad Emanuelson dead at the scene at 1 p.m.
