A 28-year-old man was killed when a car crashed into a retention pond early Monday in Romeoville.
Cmdr. Ken Kroll said at 12:32 a.m. the 2004 Pontiac was heading north on Lakeview Drive when it crossed the road and went into the water near Remington Boulevard.
Adam M. Johnson, of Bolingbrook, was driving the vehicle, which belonged to one of his three passengers, Kroll said. The four friends were believed to be returning home from Brunswick Zone Bowling Center.
“The vehicle came to rest in a retention pond north of the intersection and was completely submerged,” Kroll said.
The three passengers were able to escape the vehicle and swim to safety. They were treated on the scene by paramedics and released.
A dive team attempted to rescue Johnson, who was pulled from the driver’s seat and taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:11 a.m.
Kroll said the cause of the accident is still being investigated. An autopsy will be performed Monday and toxicology results are expected in a few weeks.
