Kendall OKs new vehicle for coroner

Updated: April 14, 2013 6:11AM

YORKVILLE – The Kendall County Board has approved spending $37,828 to purchase a new vehicle for the coroner’s office.

The county will replace the Chevrolet Suburban with 124,000 miles on it that Coroner Ken Toftoy has been driving with a new GMC Yukon.

The new vehicle will not have special equipment in it the coroner’s office needs, so Toftoy will pay the estimated $3,000 to $4,000 to install that equipment out of an equipment fund in his office budget.

One piece of equipment is a new radio. With the recent equipment upgrade for KenCom, the county’s emergency dispatch service, the old radio does not work anymore, Toftoy has said.

While only board member Amy Cesich voted against the purchase, several others questioned why the purchase was not included in the coroner’s office budget.

“In the future, we should put it in the budget,” said board member Judy Gilmour. “I just wish we could anticipate bigger expenses like this.”

Board member John Purcell said the Finance Committee is trying to do just that. It has begun a study of future capital expenses the county might have coming up.

“I would like to look out five years, to at least get an idea of what’s coming,” said Purcell, who is chairman of the Finance Committee.
