Water bills will go up by $6 beginning next month in Shorewood.
The village board Tuesday approved an ordinance creating a $6 monthly capital improvement fee that will be added to all residential and commercial accounts. The fee, which will be listed on water bills as “sewer and water rehabilitation,” becomes effective April 1.
Mayor Richard Chapman, who was absent Tuesday, called the increase “painful”, but “necessary” during last month’s meeting.
Revenues from the fee will fund improvements to the village’s water system, including a new water tower and sewer and water line maintenance, over the next five to 10 years. Village staff plans to re-evaluate the fee annually to ensure its properly funding construction and necessary repairs.
Trustee Dan Anderson said the village’s water and sewer system is aging and is experiencing increased water main breaks and infiltration issues.
“We need to be able to get in there and address the issues,” he said. “We need to have funds to be able to do that.”
