Romeoville Mayor John Noak continues to push for a debate with his opponent, former Bears player Steve McMichael.
Noak last week issued a statement noting that he was at a well-attended candidates’ forum held by the Grand Haven Civic Club and McMichael was not.
“With just a few weeks left until election day, I’m excited for the opportunity to talk to the voters of Romeoville in a public forum where they can hear where my opponent and I stand on the issues,” Noak said in the statement.
Noak said McMichael has not yet accepted an invitation to appear at a forum sponsored by the Romeoville Chamber of Commerce.
McMichael, meanwhile, received an endorsement last week from former Bears coach Mike Ditka at an event in Chicago.
Full of surprises
Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation was a shock to many Catholics because it was the first time a pope left office in a manner other than death in 600 years.
The new Pope Francis I is breaking some ground, too, said Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, head of the Diocese of Joliet.
“There are a lot of surprises to the new pope,” Conlon said last week. “He is from Latin America. He is the first pope that is a Jesuit. He’s chosen a name that no one else has chosen.”

Phase II of Veterans Affairs’ Joliet Community Based Outpatient Clinic will be unfolded as new features are completed at the facility, which opened last week at the remodeled emergency center of the vacated Silver Cross Hospital.
The clinic, for example, has a physical therapy room now. But it will be getting bigger, said Cecilia Borguignon, clinical nurse manager at the clinic.
“They’re going to move it to the ambulance bay, so it will be large,” she said.
