A Joliet man convicted of aggravated driving under the influence was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday.
Vincent E. Borgic, 61, was accused of running over Scott Zolecki, who was drunk and lying in the street in the 1100 block of East Washington Street about 10:30 p.m. July 13, 2011, according to a press release.
Zolecki died from head injuries one day later.
Borgic was found guilty after a bench trial by Will County Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak. Borgic said he never saw Zolecki before he ran him over, authorities said.
Witnesses to the incident said they saw other drivers swerving to avoid Zolecki, and that Borgic got out of his car and smoked a cigarette, but did not try to help Zolecki.
At the time of the incident, Borgic was serving court supervision for a prior DUI, authorities said.
