Train commuters and local motorists will be detoured next week when a new phase of construction starts on the downtown transportation center.
The city of Joliet announced that starting July 16 a section of Eastern Avenue be closed, and the Union Station east commuter parking lot will be closed to daily parkers at the same time because of construction.
The work is part of the $43.4 million Joliet Gateway Center, which also will bring new train and bus stations along with more parking to the commuter area around Union Station.
Eastern Avenue will be closed between Washington and Jefferson streets for railroad bridge work, the city said in a statement issued Friday. The work is expected to be completed Aug. 19. Detours will be posted.
Monthly permit holders will not be affected, but daily parking will not be allowed at the Union Station east lot because of reconstruction work and the building of new rail passenger platforms. The lot is located along the north side of the Rock Island District rail line between Mayor Arthur Schultz Drive and Eastern Avenue.
The city noted that $1 a day commuter parking will continue to be available at several locations: the new Gateway Center Marion Street lot, located at the northeast corner of Marion and Chicago streets; the New Street lot, located off New between Chicago Street and York Avenue; the Union Station lot, located off Washington Street between Chicago and Scott streets; the York Avenue lot, located off York between Washington and Osgood streets; and the Washington Street lot, located off Washington between York and Eastern avenues.
