CenterPoint Properties has acquired 245 acres that it plans to develop around an underground mine on the south end of Joliet.
The CenterPoint plan to annex the land into Joliet and have it zoned for intermodal and industrial use is scheduled to go to the city’s plan commission on Aug. 15.
The land, located along both sides of Patterson Road and north of Laraway Road, borders CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet, an industrial park being developed by the Oak Brook-based company.
CenterPoint acquired the land, including a barge terminal, from Port of Will County, said Jacque Engle, a spokeswoman for CenterPoint. The mining operation, run by Mining International, was not part of the transaction.
CenterPoint plans to find companies interested in locating distribution and industrial operations on the land, Engle said. The land is being annexed into Joliet to make city water and sewer services available to companies interested in locating there, she said.
The plan was on the agenda in July for both the plan commission and city council but was tabled.
“We’re still working with CenterPoint to get a total understanding of what they’re proposing,” said Jim Torri, a planner with the city.
The zoning sought by CenterPoint is the same that the developer has for its other property in the neighboring industrial park, Torri said.
