JOLIET TOWNSHIP — A Chicago man told police he used a kitchen knife to escape five men who robbed and beat him Wednesday morning.
Around 6 a.m. Will County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the 100 block of Schorie Avenue where a bleeding 32-year-old man was walking down the street with a knife asking residents to call police, according to spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.
The man was taken to Silver Cross Hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruises. Hoffmeyer said he told detectives that while gambling at Harrah’s Casino on Tuesday night he’d won nearly $1,000 and struck up a friendship with another patron. After going to a bar on Collins Street, the other man invited the victim to “drink and party” at a friend’s house on Schorie.
The casino patron introduced the victim to five men inside the house and left.
“After a brief conversation, (the five suspects) began beating and kicking him over his head and body and (he) was also beaten with a baseball bat,” Hoffmeyer said. The men took money from his wallet and ordered him into the basement. After being “allowed” back upstairs where the group sat partying around a table, the victim grabbed a 12-inch knife and fled.
After detectives questioned the victim, Mark A. Cortez, 38, of 1108 Bartel Road, was picked up nearby and arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated battery.
Hoffmeyer said investigators still are looking for other suspects.
