The Joliet Area Historical Museum and its recent band exhibit have been recognized with grants and awards.
The Illinois Association of Museums will present a Superior Award to the museum for the temporary exhibit marking the centennial of Joliet Township High School bands. The presentation will be Oct. 18 at the association’s annual conference in Peoria.
The museum plans to create a permanent band exhibit and has received a $61,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for that project. The budget for the permanent exhibit is $80,000, and the museum is seeking public support for the project.
Greg Peerbolte, executive director for the Joliet museum, said in a statement announcing the award that the association recognized the band exhibit for “the use of memories and the diligence to check the facts of those memories.”
Peerbolte commended museum staff for its work in creating the exhibit, which was on display from July 2012 to June 2013.
“The Joliet Township High School bands, and the impact they have had on the musicians and the community, are worthy of this remarkable exhibit,” he said.
Meanwhile, the museum recently received an $8,000 grant from the Illinois Arts Council to support operations.
“This grant is unique in that it can be used for general operating funds without restriction,” Peerbolte said.
