Spc. Jovonta Devon Duncan of Plainfield and Spc. Johanna Hernandez of Des Plaines, both with the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 405th Brigade Support Battalion, 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in North Riverside, were returning from lunch Sept. 14 when they saw a vehicle collide with a sport utility vehicle at Des Plaines Street and Roosevelt Road in Chicago, the release said.
The SUV rolled over, and Duncan and Hernandez pulled the people from the car and provided first aid until first responders arrived, the release said.
“The car was smoking so I knew we had to get the people out of the vehicle as soon as possible,” Duncan said.
Hernandez said soldiers are trained year-round in first aid, survival and how to make decisions under intense pressure.
Duncan and Hernandez received a commanders coin from Col. Troy Phillips, the brigade commander of the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in Chicago, according to the release.
“What these soldiers did embody the National Guard’s motto of ‘Always Ready, Always There,’ ” Phillips said in the release. “It is an outstanding achievement and they acted an opportunity to step up and help someone, and that deserves to be recognized.”
