JOLIET TOWNSHIP — Criminal charges were filed against a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman last month in her home on Grinton Street, Will County sheriff’s police said.
William L. Prater, 36, turned himself into police on Tuesday to face charges of criminal sexual abuse and unlawful restraint stemming from the Sept. 21 incident, according to police spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.
A 19-year-old woman told police that Prater walked uninvited into the house where she lives with a 30-year-old friend. Prater, a transient whose last known address was in Wilmington, is an acquaintance of the women, Hoffmeyer said.
She said the women told him to leave but he declined, and they felt intimidated by Prater, who’s 6 feet 7 inches tall. They went to bed about 2 a.m., while Prater continued drinking in the kitchen, Hoffmeyer said.
“A short time later, he came into the 19-year-old’s room and began touching her inappropriately, attempting to have sex with her while she fought him off,” Hoffmeyer said.
Hoffmeyer said the victim was interviewed by sheriff’s police detectives a few days later and an arrest warrant for Prater was issued Sept. 24. She said Prater recently became aware of the warrant and called police, who picked him up in the 400 block of Morgan Street.
