Joliet lays out leaf and yard waste rules
The city of Joliet announced procedures for leaf and yard waste collection this autumn.
Leaves and yard waste can be put in “rigid containers,” such as garbage cans, no more than 32 gallons in size and in 30-gallon Kraft paper yard waste bags. Rigid containers must be clearly marked for yard waste. Free yard waste labels are available at Joliet City Hall and at Jewel Foods and Dominick’s stores.
Residents may also use 96-gallon Waste Management carts, which also must be clearly marked for yard waste. The carts can be purchased or rented from Waste Management. Call 815-280-7854.
Yard waste is picked up on regular garbage collection days. Leaf burning is prohibited in Joliet.
The city will not pick up leaves in loose piles. Residents face fines starting at $150 for raking leaves onto sidewalks, parkways and streets. The city noted that loose leaves in the streets can block drainage openings.
Tree limbs, branches and brush must be bundled in sizes no more than four feet in length with no items more than three inches in diameter.
Bundles must not weigh more than 50 pounds. Yard waste collection runs until Dec. 6.
