Students who attend Catholic schools in the Diocese of Joliet are going to try and take fundraising matters into their own hands — or feet, more precisely, with an upcoming charity walk.
The Oct. 18 walk is called, “Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat,” and it is a diocesan-wide effort to raise money for Catholic schools in the Diocese of Joliet.
The biggest problem that elementary and high schools in the diocese are facing is decreasing enrollment. There are more than 4,000 empty slots to fill at elementary and high schools in the diocese, which translates into money being lost.
Students from 26 of the Diocese’s 47 schools will take part in the walk. Those students taking part are from elementary schools. High schools will not be participating.
At a designated time right before final dismissal, students will walk one loop around their schools to raise money for Catholic education. Parents and other family members are invited to attend the walk.
“We launched this about two months ago,” said Eileen Healy, a Catholic Education Foundation board member of the Diocese of Joliet. “We are hoping this will spur some generosity. We have those 4,000 unoccupied spots because of the current economy and we want to encourage kids to contribute.”
Healy said the foundation is also trying to find a similar fundraiser for high school students. Healy said she is hopeful to get high schools participating in the walk next year.
Those taking part in the walk include Most Reverend Bishop J. Siegel, who will walk with students at the Cathedral of St. Raymond School in Joliet. Superintendent of Schools Father John Belmonte, Catholic Education Foundation Executive Director Joe Langenderfer and Healy will walk at St. Michael School in Wheaton.
The Catholic Education Foundation is accepting donations on its home page at www.dioceseofjoliet.org/edfoundation/moveyourfeet.asp or by mail to The Catholic Education Foundation, Attn: Move Your Feet, 101 W. Airport Road, Romeoville, IL 60446-6527.
