Quick News: Valley View to host workshops on Core State Standards

The Valley View School District will host 10 community forums and parent workshops this fall to discuss the changes to the Common Core State Standards that will affect every student.
The workshops and forums will take place over the next six weeks in nine different venues in Bolingbrook and Romeoville.
The forums will begin on Oct. 23 at the Bolingbrook High School cafeteria (enter door No. 17) and Oct. 29 at Lukancic Middle School in Romeoville. Both events begin at 6:30 p.m.
VVSD superintendent Dr. James Mitchem will host a question and answer session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the district’s Administration Center, 755 Dalhart Ave. in Romeoville.
Workshops for middle school parents will be at Martinez and Jane Addams schools at 6:30 on Nov. 13.
Elementary school parents can attend a workshop at 7 p.m., Nov. 14 at Skoff Elementary School in Romeoville; or 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at Independence or Tibbott schools. And high school parents are invited to attend a workshop at either Romeoville or Bolingbrook high schools at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 20.
Joliet Central Alum, teacher wins Art Educator of the Year
Joliet Central High School alumna Eryn Blaser will receive the Elementary Art Educator of the Year award from the Illinois Art Association. Blaser, a 2002 Central graduate, will receive the award at the association’s conference Oct. 25 at the Hilton in Lisle.
Blaser teaches at the Meadow Ridge School in Orland Park and is in her seventh year of teaching at the school.
Joliet Township High School to host 5K
The Joliet Township High School Alumni Association is hosting a “Jolly Old St. Nick” 5K Fun Run/Walk at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 30 at Joliet Central High School.
The walk/run is open for all ages and families and strollers are welcome. Participants will wear five-piece Santa suits, which can be picked up beginning Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the JTHS Administrative Center, 300 Caterpillar Dr.
The registration fee is $25 for adults, $15 for students and $10 for children 12 years of age and under. Participants must register by midnight on Nov. 17. Reigstration can be done online at www.active.com. For more information call (815) 727-6763.
