Joliet has approved the 245-acre annexation that brings a barge terminal into the CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet industrial park.
The city council on Tuesday approved the annexation, which includes the Port of Will County operation acquired by CenterPoint.
The CenterPoint development already includes the Union Pacific intermodal yard, which transfers cargo between trains and trucks. The Oak Brook-based developer is considering additional rail facilities along with the addition of the barge terminal to the Joliet industrial park.
The council also approved Joliet’s intermodal zoning designation to the land brought into the city. The annexation allows CenterPoint to bring city water and sewer to the property for the sake of future development.
The annexation includes thre parcels north of Laraway Road and on both sides of Patterson Road.
Also on Tuesday, the council:
Approved an agreement with Metra that makes more land available for a commuter parking lot with 398 spaces to serve the future transportation center downtown;
Heard from Louis Joliet Mall Manager Kate Knuth that the mall has maintained a 98 percent occupancy rate and will spend $150,000 on landscaping improvements this month.
