JOLIET — Police say a man learned why car insurance is important as he was buying it Tuesday evening.
The man arrived at an insurance office in the 1300 block of West Jefferson Street to purchase coverage for a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse he had just bought, according to Cmdr. Al Roechner.
“The victim left the vehicle unlocked with the keys in the ignition as he went into the business,” Roechner said, and a few minutes later a 14-year-old Joliet boy climbed behind the wheel and drove away after striking another vehicle in the parking lot.
Rockdale police found the Eclipse near West Park a short time later.
“The Rockdale officer searched the area and found a 16-year-old Joliet boy he previously arrested for stealing a car,” Roechner said.
The 16-year-old told police he was picked up by his 14-year-old friend, who under questioning admitted stealing the car, according to police.
The 14-year-old was charged with motor vehicle theft and booked into the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
