JOLIET — Fire caused substantial damage Thursday night to a one-story house in the 300 block of Romayne Avenue, but four people inside escaped without injury, a fire department official said.
Battalion Chief Ron Schroeder said the blaze began about 11:10 p.m., and flames were coming out the windows of the family room and kitchen when firefighters arrived.
He said the four occupants got out safely, but firefighters were unable to save one of the three dogs found inside.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the fire appears to have started in the family room, Schroeder said, adding that the house has been declared uninhabitable.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP — Will County Gang Suppression Unit officers found crack cocaine, cash and a handgun while searching an apartment on Thursday, police said.
Sheriff’s police Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said a month-long investigation led to a search warrant being served about 9 p.m. in the 600 block of Darcy Avenue and the arrest of Porsha Williams.
“Officers found a 9mm handgun in a closet and a digital scale with drug residue, baggies, $190 and 42 grams of cocaine in the residence,” Kaupas said.
Williams, 23, was charged with drug trafficking, possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia and unauthorized possession of a firearm by a felon.
