Man shot in fast-food restaurant in Joliet

JOLIET — A man was shot in the calf during dinner time Monday in the Wendy’s restaurant at Jefferson and Center streets.

A shot rang out during some sort of dispute at about 7 p.m. There were about 25 people in the place at the time, and they all ran off when the gun was fired, police said.

Investigators were piecing together the incident Monday night. It was not clear if the victim shot himself accidentally or was hit by a bullet from another man’s gun.

Police said the victim was in stable condition at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Man dies after fire in Crete apartment

CRETE — A died of smoke inhalation after an apartment fire Sunday night in Crete.

The man, who remained unidentified as of Monday afternoon, was pronounced dead at Saint James Hospital in Chicago Heights at 7:04 p.m. Sunday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

An autopsy Monday found the victim, a black man in his 30s, died from carbon monoxide intoxication and inhalation of smoke and soot, and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.

The fire was reported at 6:25 p.m. at 1401 Main St., Crete Fire Chief Lyle Bachert said. It was contained to the kitchen area of the “relatively small apartment” and was extinguished in about 20 minutes, he said. No other injures were reported and no one in the eight-unit building was displaced, Bachert said. The state fire marshal’s office is investigating.

Fire damages garage and vehicle

JOLIET — Fire damaged an attached garage Monday afternoon on the far west side.

Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief LaRoy Aldridge said the blaze was reported just before 3 p.m. in the 2200 block of Cedar Ridge Drive.

“No one was injured. The garage suffered moderate damage, and a Lincoln Aviator parked inside was also damaged,” Aldridge said.

Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Justin W. Toland: 24, of Columbus, Ga., was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Wednesday on a charge of residential burglary.

Elma J. King: 57, of Little Rock, Ark., was arrested by sheriff’s police and booked into the county jail Thursday on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
