Will-Grundy Center supporters will be honored at awards program

Updated: August 4, 2011 4:20PM

JOLIET — The annual meeting and awards program of the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living will be 5:30-8 p.m. May 18 at the agency’s office, 2415 W. Jefferson St.

The event offers an opportunity for staff and directors to join with supporters, consumers, advocates, civic leaders and elected officials to recognize the United Way agency’s past year of service to people with disabilities of all types and all ages.

Plans include a reception with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments with a program to follow, Board President Denise Winfrey announced.

The short program will feature an update on the center’s programs and services, a report on the state budget crisis and its impact on the Community Reintegration Program, and recognition of longtime staff, as well as the presentation of its Accessibility Achievement, Volunteer of the Year and Ed Roberts in Independent Living Awards.

“This year we decided to invite our supporters and advocates to visit our office and take part in our annual meeting and awards program at the same time,” said Executive Director Pam Heavens. “Hosting it in our office allows us to remain cost-effective and consumer-focused, while combining friendship and food, so we’re looking forward to a great event.”

The center asks that registration and $10 per person payment be made to the center by May 10, the final RSVP date. Payment may be made by credit card, check or money order.

The center is a nonprofit United Way agency that relies solely on grants and contributions to serve a growing population in the two-county area.

Through an agreement with the Grundy County Housing Authority, the center opened an office in January in Saratoga Tower in Morris. The office is staffed two days a week to serve residents and all people with disabilities throughout Grundy County.
