Woman killed in Channahon crash identified

Updated: June 12, 2011 12:39AM

CHANNAHON —Authorities have identified a woman killed in a traffic crash Tuesday.

At 3:30 p.m. Carolyn A. Grey, 44, was driving an SUV westbound on Route 6, when her vehicle was struck by a semi-trailer at Bell Road, police said.

The semi trailer was traveling east on Route 6 when it hit the westbound SUV at 3:30 p.m., Channahon police Chief Joe Pena said.

Pena said the semi hit the passenger side of the SUV, forcing the vehicle into a light pole at the southeast corner of the intersection.

Grey was pronounced dead at the scene. The 4-year-old was extricated from the car and flown by helicopter to a Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. The 1-year-old girl was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. Both were in stable condition, Pena said. The victims were not identified Tuesday night.

It is believed that both children were in the back seat of the vehicle, he said, but it was hard to tell because the SUV was so mangled.

The truck driver was not injured.

State police are reconstructing the accident, which is still under investigation. No citations have been issued.

“It is truly a tragic accident,” Pena said.

The pole that SUV hit was put up last year for a traffic light that community members had sought and studies supported, Pena said. A new high school helped create the need for the traffic light at the intersection.

“We’ve had personal injury accidents there, but nothing to this magnitude,” Pena said.
